Are zinc coated screws magnetic?
Some time ago, Mr. Wang from Jiangsu asked Miss Song from Shi Shi Tong, saying that he wanted to make zinc coated screws, and asked us whether this kind of screw would be magnetic?
Whether the zinc coated screws are magnetic is generally determined by the material of the screw. The materials that Shi Shi Tong can produce are stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, pure titanium and copper. Among them, the surface of stainless steel and carbon steel can be galvanized. If it is carbon steel, then the galvanized screw is magnetic.
But if it is a stainless steel screw, it may not be magnetic in general. Because stainless steel is weakly magnetic, if the material is relatively small, or if the surface of the screw is stained with iron filings/iron powder, it will show magnetic properties when galvanized.
Therefore, whether the galvanized screw is magnetic depends on the material of the screw. However, if the stainless steel screw is galvanized, it can only be made of environmentally friendly black zinc, and Shi Shi Tong does not recommend this kind of surface treatment, because the galvanized layer of environmentally friendly black zinc is not strong enough to adhere to the surface of the material. As a result, the surface of the screw is more prone to peeling or whitening.
