Are brass screws rust proof?

Brass screws are an extremely useful screw type that can be used across varying applications. The brass make-up of the screw offers a number of useful characteristics.

Even the moisture in the wood itself is enough to rust a plain steel screw. For this reason, steel wood screws are usually covered with a rust-resistant coating. Typically, there are a couple of choices in plated wood screws: brass or zinc, with zinc being the most common.

The anti-corrosive and water resistant nature of these screws means they are ideal for exterior use.

Typically, brass screws can be more aesthetically pleasing as the brass offers a softer tan colouring that works well with wood. Typically smaller brass screws are used when building furniture or installing doors etc.Brass is a softer metal and so must be used with more care. It is also, as always, beneficial to use a screwdriver that fits the head of the screw exactly.

WHY USE BRASS SCREWS FOR OUTSIDE?

Quite often iron screws with a brass plating are used, but brass screw work just as well. The main benefits of these screws will be found when installed in areas that cannot be easily maintained, and should be used instead of more typical iron screws which can rust.

BRASS SCREWS FOR MARINE USE?

For decades brass screw have been used on marine equipment, purely as these are the best screws for the job. The water resistant and anti-corrosive qualities of these screws are perfect for use around the sea and underwater (or anywhere where it is generally a bit damp!)

Regular steel and iron screws can corrode from prolonged exposure to the wind, sun and rain, and so pure brass screws or brass plated iron screws are the best for the job.
