One of the important terms of the thread of a screw is the outer diameter. In the case of metric threads, the bolts are named according to their outer diameter. For example, a screw with an outer diameter of 6 mm is called an M6 bolt.

Thread is another important feature of the screw, which is the thread pitch. Spacing is defined as the distance between adjacent threads. For example, if they are to be used together, the nuts and bolts must have the same pitch and diameter.

The principle of cutting threads in a screw thread is that the screws (external threads) are usually cut from a material rod of the same diameter. The nut is made of a larger material that is drilled with a hole that is slightly larger than the rod diameter. The same pitch thread is then cut, which results in two mating threads. The same principle applies to cutting holes in places and other workpieces.

Screws are often used to secure the mating parts. When the two components are screwed together, one component is made of a thread and the other component is made of a clearance hole having a gap diameter larger than the diameter of the screw. If the diameter of the clearance hole is too small, the part cannot be assembled because the screw cannot pass through the hole. In addition, if the diameter of the clearance hole is too large, the part will loosen because the hole will provide a loose fit. Therefore, we must provide a cut hole of the appropriate diameter. As a “rule of thumb”, the diameter of the clearance hole is 10% larger than the diameter of the screw. For example, the M3 screw has a clearance hole diameter of 3.2 mm or 3.5 mm. The clearance hole diameter of the M4 screw is 4.2 mm or 4.5.
