For flat head self tapping screws that have an end cone length specified, the maximum effective design clamping length can be determined by subtracting the length of the largest tapered portion from the minimum screw length. For self-tapping screws of type AB, A, and BP, the end length is not included in the size, and the maximum effective clamping length must be calculated by appropriately reflecting the maximum end length coefficient. Note that for combination screws, the increase in gasket thickness must be considered when determining the maximum effective clamping length. The formula for calculating the maximum effective clamping length:
